What Is A Mug Cake?

For those of you who have unfortunately missed out on the mug-cake craze that started to sweep through kitchens and the internet a few years ago, you may be wondering what exactly a mug cake is in the first place.

Well, it is essentially exactly what it sounds like. They are a cake that is made inside of a normal coffee mug.

However, because most mugs are not made to withstand oven temperatures without damaging and breaking them, so they are usually made from another heat source.

Because of this, you’ll find that most mug cakes are made by placing the mug with the mix inside in a microwave to heat it.

Why Are Mug Cakes So Popular?

With such a small, quite literally if you are only using a small mug for your Oreo dessert, change to the recipe, why exactly have mug cakes become so popular in recent years?

Well, for one thing, mug cakes do not tend to be very difficult to make.

Because most of the ingredients are put and mixed in the mug it is being eaten from, there are only a few implements you are likely to use.

This not only makes it easier for pretty much anyone to make them, but they also end up cutting down on messes that are made when transferring mixes between a bowl and the mold that the mixture is being cooked in, which, in this case, is the mug.

Plus, because your mug cake only ever needs to serve one or two people at most, they also cut down on food waste.

When you compare the potential waste of a whole cake to just one mug cake, it becomes pretty clear which one ends up wasting more ingredients.

Probably the best, or at least, the most popular thing about a lot of the mug cake recipes is probably how quick they are to make for yourself.

After all, being cooked in a microwave, and a microwave-safe mug means that the mixture is done in only a few minutes, or even less in some cases!

Making An Oreo Mug Cake

So, as you can probably tell at this point, it is pretty easy to see why mug cakes might be so popular right now, especially those of us with a craving for sugar and one that has to be sated on the spot!

So, with that done, you probably want to know how to make your mini Oreo cake for yourself!

Oreo Mug Cake Recipe Ingredients List

Firstly, you are probably curious as to what ingredients you will likely need for your Oreo mug cake recipe.

  • Oreos (obviously. Regular sized or mini Oreos will work fine)
  • Milk (This can be dairy milk, soy milk, non-dairy milk, or any other milk substitute that you may want)
  • Baking Powder (Not to be confused with baking soda)
  • Sugar (Either superfine or caster will work nicely)
  • Cocoa Powder (Unsweetened. Hot cocoa powder can be too bitter)
  • Flour (All-purpose or plain flour will work)

Extra Ingredients

Whilst these are the basic ingredients used in this recipe, there are plenty of others that people on the internet have added to their own mini guilty craving cakes, such as chocolate syrup, peanut butter chips, chocolate chips, and whipped cream for garnish on top.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, though, let’s focus on this recipe!

This super easy mug cake recipe comes courtesy of Baking Envy if you would like the extra notes on this recipe.

First, you should mix all the ingredients we mentioned before in your large microwave-safe mug, first by mashing your Oreos together into fine dust or grain, then add milk (or non-dairy milk substitute), then by adding the other ingredients.

(Make sure to mix them until the cake batter is nice and combined!)

If you want to add a little extra garnish, we recommend crushed Oreos (what else do you need, after all?)

After that, you can put your Oreo microwave mug cake batter in the microwave, and microwave it for one minute (longer if your microwave is less than 1100 Watts, for that much-needed heat to cook the batter).

Make sure that, when you take it out, all the raw batter has been cooked.

And that’s it! We told you that it was super simple to make!

We would recommend letting it cool slightly for just a minute or two before eating. It has just been cooked, after all!

Finishing Thoughts

As we have hopefully shown you, this type of cake is super easy to make from Oreo cookies.

Once you have mastered this, you can start adding tons of other ingredients, from chocolate chips, to pretty much anything else!
