Is It Safe To Heat Food On A Paper Plate?

Just think about it: everyday life can be busy – and this is where the magic of a paper plate comes into the mix.

Whether you spend the majority of your weekdays in back-to-back meetings or you run a busy household full of lots of hungry tummies come dinner time – opting to use a paper plate (otherwise known as disposable plates) will allow you to skip the dishes.

Not only that, but additional conveniences such as paper towels and paper napkins that you can use alongside your plain paper plates. Does it get any better than that? The only question is, can you microwave paper plates?

In some instances, you might like to reheat some leftover food to enjoy the next day, and this leads many people to wonder whether or not it is possible to reheat food on their paper plates, all while ensuring that the process will be entirely microwave-safe.

The best way to understand this is to first consider the way that a microwave oven works.

How Does A Microwave Work?

Essentially, the microwave works by generating something that is known as short radio waves – which is precisely why it is called the microwave.

In order to generate heat, the inside of the microwave is reflective which allows the short radio waves to bounce off the interior surfaces.

Thanks to this, the short radio waves will then pass through the food inside the microwave, and cause the water molecules inside the food begin to heat up.

While this is quite a complex process, the main takeaway is that the microwave is able to heat up food, and fast!

It is also important to note that microwaves are also able to do this in a very efficient way, as the short radio waves it produces have the ability to pass through a variety of materials without heating up.

What Materials Are Suitable For The Microwave?

These include the following:

  • Ceramic plates
  • Ceramic dishware
  • Plastics (plastic plate etc)
  • Glass plates
  • Microwave safe containersIs It Safe to Microwave Paper Plates?

So, what about paper plates? Well, even though there are many paper plates that are suitable for the microwave, not all paper plates are suitable.

If you want to reheat your food on paper plates, it’s important to make sure that you are following microwave safety rules in order to prevent a fire hazard as well as to ensure safety.

On top of this, you should also only ever use paper plates that have been labeled as microwave safe.

Even though it’s possible to reheat just about anything, using the wrong paper plates could cause the paper to catch fire, regardless of whether you have disposable plates or reusable plates.

For this reason, it’s a good idea to make sure that you are well aware of what types of plates are not going to be safe for the microwave. This brings us to our next section.

Can You Microwave Paper Plates?

What Paper Plates Are Not Microwaveable?

As we have already mentioned above, even though most paper plates that will be suitable for the microwave and classed as microwave safe – not all of them have been designed and cold melt, heat up, or even catch fire.

This is very similar for other convenient kitchen products, such as aluminum foil and other types of paper products.

In order to be able to understand which types of paper plates are not going to be suitable for the microwave, it’s important to understand the two main reasons paper plates might not be suitable for the microwave:

1. The Paper Plates Have Been Made From Materials That Will Absorb The Radio Waves

This is the first main reason that microwaving paper plates might not be suitable.

If they have been made from paper that does not contain any plastic coatings, then they will absorb the waves from the microwave which will ultimately cause the paper plates to begin to heat up, melt and become distorted.

For example, some of the most common materials used to make paper plates that are not suitable for the microwave include wax paper, parchment paper, plastic wrap, and more.

2. The Paper Plates Contain Materials That Will Not Be Food Safe Once Heated

This is another reason why plain white paper plates might not be suitable for the microwave!

In some instances, paper plates are made containing materials that are not food safe once they are exposed to a certain temperature.

This can then cause the food to be unsafe to eat after you have heated them up in the microwave, while also potentially causing the paper plates to release toxic chemicals, too.

Along with this, there should also typically be a label on the plain white paper plates that will let you know whether or not they are safe to be used in the microwave.

If they are labeled as microwave safe, this is a strong indication they are safe to microwave and do not contain any harmful chemicals or be susceptible to electromagnetic radiation.

This will allow you to know for sure whether or not the paper plates that you have are suitable for use in the microwave.

When Is A Paper Plate Suitable For The Microwave?

Now that we have covered what types of paper plates are not suitable for microwaving, we are now going to be sharing with you what types of paper plates are suitable for microwaving.

What is it exactly that makes paper plates microwave safe?

Typically, a paper plate that has been made with a special plastic coating will be suitable for use in the microwave.

This type of plastic goating will typically be applied during the paper manufacturing process.

This is because the plastic coating will be able to ensure that the radio waves do not pass through into the paper plates and cause them to heat up with the food that it is holding.

Essentially, when heating food, these types of plates in the microwave will not catch fire or pose a fire hazard, and will be both paper plate safe as well as have a microwave safe label.

Again, just to make sure that you are safely using your paper plates, we recommend that you read the label to discover whether or not your paper plates can be used in the microwave!

The Bottom Line

There we have it.

All in all, whether or not paper plates can be used in the oven will ultimately come down to which type of paper plates you are using – as there are some paper plates that are suitable for the microwave, while others are not suitable to be heated.

To make sure that you are able to use your microwave and plain white paper plates safely (as well as any other additional items such as brown paper bags, paper towels, plastic containers, plastic wrap, and other paper items), we recommend that you read the label of the packaging that the paper plates came in.

This is because it will contain all of the relevant safety information, including whether or not your particular paper plates are microwave safe.

The last thing that you want to do is to heat your paper plate, only to discover it catching fire from the heat.

Thanks for reading, we hope that we have been able to show you how to safely reheat food with your paper plate, all while ensuring microwave safety.
